This festival is celebrated on the Chaturthi of the Krishna paksh of the month of the Kartika. On this day, married females keep the fast, to wish for the long life of their husband. Unmarried or bachelor ladies or girls also keep this famous fast of Karwa Chauth, & pray for a good husband. This specific festival is celebrated mainly in the whole north India.
Main Golden rules which define the fast of Karwa Chauth:
One should start this fast before the sunrises till the moon rises.
In the evening time, 1 hour before the moon rises, one should worship lord Shiva, Parvathi, Nand ji, Ganesha ji & Karthikeya ji.
During the worship of the gods during the fast, the female should sit in the north direction and the idols should be placed towards the south.
Karwa Chauth Katha:
According to the Karwa Chauth Katha, there were total 7 sons of a rich zamindaar & a daughter with the name of Karwa. Once, when they had Karwa Chauth fast celebrated at their home, the seven brothers of Karwa could not see her hungry for much long and insisted her to take her meal. Karwa hesitated and refused their proposal by saying that as moon has not risen so far, she will not eat anything till the time moon don’t rise. Her brothers could not bear her pain and sacrifice by staying empty stomach, and showed her a fake moon, which they made by lighting a small lamp at a certain distance in a tree of peepal. Innocent Karwa could not realize the difference between that moon and the actual one and broke her fast on the continuous insisting of her brothers. The moment she ate the first bite, she got to hear the news of the demise of her husband. Shocked and depressed Karwa kept her husband’s body for a year till the time; grass started growing on his body. She started collecting the grass and in the next year, during the Kartika Krishna Chaturthi, she did the complete Karwa Chauth fast with proper dedication and her husband came back to life.

In the city of Mathura, the Karwa Chauth day is usually silent and there are no people who keep this fast. The main reason behind this is that the long years ago, a couple while going towards surir with one of their buffalo, faced difficult times as the native people of surir tried to snatch the buffalo from them, and in the fist and fight, the Brahman died. After his death, his unfortunate wife, cursed whole surir, with the bad omen, that all the married females of the city suris will lose their husbands and become a widow.
After this specific, incident, not a single married lady wears a bindi or a makeup after marriage in suris for almost a year after the marriage.
