Karwa Chauth is a traditional Hindu festival that holds a special place in the lives of many married couples. Women observe a day-long fast and offer prayers for their husbands’ well-being, long life and happiness. The day is associated with devotion, family traditions, festive celebrations and the strengthening of marital bonds.

From preparing Sargi before sunrise to performing the evening puja and waiting for the Moon to appear, every part of Karwa Chauth carries cultural and religious significance. Here is everything you need to know about Karwa Chauth 2026, including its date, puja timings, essential samagri and the traditional method of worship.

Karwa Chauth will be observed on Thursday, 29 October 2026. It falls on Krishna Paksha Chaturthi in the Hindu lunar calendar.

On this day, devotees traditionally worship Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva and Lord Ganesha. The fast is generally observed from sunrise until the Moon is sighted in the evening, followed by Moon worship and the customary breaking of the fast.

For New Delhi, the following timings are listed for Karwa Chauth 2026:

Karwa Chauth is traditionally associated with prayers for a husband’s long life, good health and prosperity. The festival also represents faith, affection and commitment within marriage.

The word Karwa refers to a small pot, traditionally made of clay, while Chauth means the fourth lunar day. The Karwa is used in customary rituals and offerings associated with the festival.

Goddess Parvati is worshipped as a symbol of devotion and marital strength. Lord Shiva is revered as her divine consort, while Lord Ganesha is worshipped for auspicious beginnings and the removal of obstacles. The Moon is also an important part of the evening ritual.

Although customs differ between families and regions, the central theme remains prayer, devotion and the wish for happiness in married life.

Before beginning the evening worship, arrange the puja items in a clean and organised space. The commonly used samagri includes:

The list may be adapted to suit your family’s customary way of performing the puja.

Sargi is the pre-dawn meal traditionally eaten before the fast begins. In many families, the mother-in-law prepares or gives Sargi to her daughter-in-law as a gesture of affection and blessings.

The meal may include fruits, dry fruits, roti, sweets and other foods prepared at home. Women complete their Sargi before sunrise and then follow the fasting practice observed in their family.

After waking up and bathing, wear clean clothes and offer a prayer to God. Take a personal sankalp to observe the vrat with devotion and sincerity.

Many women choose traditional clothing and apply mehndi to mark the festive occasion. You can prepare your puja space during the day so that the evening rituals can be performed peacefully.

In the evening, place the Karwa, diya, roli, rice, flowers and sweets in the puja thali. Arrange the pictures or idols of the deities in a clean worship area.

Light the diya and offer flowers, kumkum, rice and prasad according to your family tradition. Pray to Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva and Lord Ganesha for peace, happiness and harmony in your household.

Perform the puja during the prescribed evening muhurat. Women may sit together, prepare their thalis and participate in the customary rituals.

In many North Indian households, women exchange Karwas or traditional offerings while reciting prayers. The exact procedure differs by region and family tradition, so following the customs practised at home is appropriate.

Listening to the traditional vrat katha is an important part of Karwa Chauth observance. The story of Veeravati is one of the well-known legends associated with this fast.

The story is traditionally shared as a reminder of devotion, faith and the importance of observing the vrat according to its customs. Families may follow different versions of the katha depending on their regional traditions.

After the Moon becomes visible, devotees traditionally offer water to it as part of the evening worship. Many women look at the Moon through a sieve and then view their husbands through it, following a familiar family custom.

The husband may offer water to his wife, after which she breaks her fast. If clouds obstruct the view of the Moon, follow the guidance of your family tradition or local religious authority rather than assuming a universal alternative ritual.

Once the customary Moon-worship ritual has been completed, women break their fast with water and food. A light, nourishing meal can be a comfortable way to begin eating again after a long day.

Fasting practices vary, and strict fasting without water is not suitable for everyone. Anyone with diabetes, pregnancy, other medical conditions or regular medication requirements should consult a healthcare professional before attempting a strict fast.

Traditionally, the fast begins after Sargi before sunrise and continues until the evening Moon-worship ritual. During the day, devotees may spend time praying, preparing offerings and getting ready for the puja.

Some families follow additional customs involving clothing, gifts, bangles, sweets or blessings from elders. These are expressions of family tradition rather than rules that must be identical in every household.

The most important aspect of observing the festival is to follow one’s customs with sincerity while taking personal health and circumstances into consideration.

Karwa Chauth is also known for its festive appearance. Red, maroon, pink and other bright colours are popular choices for sarees, lehengas and salwar suits. Many women complete their outfits with bangles, earrings, mehndi and traditional jewellery.

Homes and puja spaces may be decorated with flowers, diyas and colourful cloth. A beautifully arranged puja thali adds to the festive atmosphere and helps keep the required items ready for the evening rituals.

There is no single compulsory colour or outfit for the occasion. Choose what feels comfortable and meaningful to you.

While Karwa Chauth is rooted in religious and cultural traditions, the occasion can also be a moment for couples to appreciate one another. Love and commitment are reflected not only in rituals but also in everyday kindness, honest communication and shared responsibilities.

Families may celebrate the day with prayers, gifts and a special meal after the fast. For many couples, the evening becomes an opportunity to spend meaningful time together and express gratitude for their relationship.

Karwa Chauth continues to bring together generations through customs passed down within families. Observing these traditions in a way that respects both faith and personal well-being can make the occasion more meaningful.

May Karwa Chauth 2026 bring peace, happiness, understanding and prosperity to every home celebrating this auspicious festival.

Karwa Chauth 2026 Shubh Puja Muhurat
