What Is Vat Purnima ?

Purnima means full moon and it is celebrated when moon is full. The fifteenth day of the jyeshtha month that is June in the Hindu calendar is purnima. Vat means a banyan tree. On this auspicious day, married women worship banyan tree for the prosperity and longevity of their husbands.

The whole process is known as Peepal Pooja. It is done in due respect to Savitri, the legend wife who protected her husband from the God of death, Yama.

Fasting Procedure

The fast begins from the thirteen day of the month continues till 15th.

  • On the first day, one can eat a single meal at night.
  • On the second ay, one can eat fruits whenever necessary.
  • On the third day, one observe fast without water till the next day for their husbands prosperity and longevity.
  • Wear bridal dress and jewelry.
  • Offer water to the tree, sprinkle sindoor ( red powder) and light a ghee lamp.
  • Worship banyan tree and tie cotton thread around its trunk and take seven rounds.
  • Married women form groups and listen to the story of Savitri.
  • Fruits and clothes should be given in a bamboo basket to saints and poor people.
  • Feed as much birds and animals as you can.

The Story Behind

The legendary story is of Savitri and Satyavan. Satyavan was not granted to live long and one day he suddenly died while resting in Savitri’s lamp. Savitri refused to let go her husband with the messengers who came from Yama’s abode. Yama decided to go himself to take Satyavan’s soul. Savitri was still refusing and was aked to demand a boon. She asked her In-laws well being and granted. She was adamant and again asked to ask for a boon. She asked the well being of her parents and granted. She still followed Yama taking Satyavan’s body, again asked for a boon and she asked for a son this time and granted. She told the God of death that this boon will not be fulfilled without her husband. Yama was impressed with her devotion and realized her determination and love for her husband. He returned her husband to his body.
